THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/cyprus

26/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - British Liberal-Democrat Andrew Duff says in a press release, regarding the discussion on the report by the Luxembourg Socialist Jacques Poos on Cyprus' membership (see EUROPE of 20 June, p.3, and 22 June, p.6), that the European Parliament should "seek to build bridges between the rival communities on the island". "We also have to be realists, and understand that for Cyprus to be let into the European Union without significant progress being made towards a comprehensive settlement is likely to entrench the divisions", says the Euro-MP, stating that he had tabled amendments to the Poos Report, aimed notably at: - taking account of the fears of the Turkish Cypriot community; - suggesting a "new bi-zonal federal solution".
