21/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - Anna Maria Campogrande, official at the European Commission, has written to President Prodi regretting that the "English oil slick" at the Commission has "reached geographic proportions". To support this, she sends geographic maps of Europe published solely in English, where Italia "has become Italy". If we go on like this, she scorned, "you will become Valiantmen, and myself Greatfield". She affirmed that English is "a language like the others, certainly not more important than German, French or Italian, which are the languages of the three great founding Member States". She calls for reflection on the adoption of a "code of conduct for languages" for European Institutions but also for the Member States.
