First visit by Budgetary Control Committee to a candidate country

Brussels, 21/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - A delegation from the European Parliament's Budgetary Control Committee (COCBU), lead by the President Diemut Theato (EPP-ED, German) and including the Austrian Socialist Herbert Bosch, the Danish Socialist Fredy Blak, Gabriela Stauner (EPP-ED, German) and the Portuguese Socialist Paulo Casaca, undertaking from 19 to 22 June a visit to Slovakia. This first visit by a delegation from the COCBU to an accession candidate country has as aim to record the use of pre-accession aids on the ground. The delegation is examining the various projects carried out in the framework of the Phare programme (such as the assistance given to the Roma population in the East of the country, on the educational level). The MEPs must also look at border problems, in particular with the Ukraine, and visits to infrastructure projects for the treatment of wastewaters are also on the programme. The delegation must also hold talks with the Slovakian authorities responsible for border control, the fight against fraud and the management of Community funds, and have a meeting with the Slovak Parliament's investigation commission, formed following the allegations of the misappropriation of Community funds by the Slovak civil servant Roland Toth, and with the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Kadlecikova who replaced Mr Hamzik (resigned following the Toth case).
