Brussels, 21/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Intergroup of the European Parliament on "Capital Tax, Fiscal Systems and Globalisation", chaired by Harlem Désir, French Socialist, is organising for 27 June in Brussels a hearing of economists on the Tobin Tax followed by a round table discussion on the possible initiatives to be taken by the Belgian Presidency. Participants at the round table will include Chrles Picqué, Belgian Minister for Economy and Scientific Research. Three economists will present the results of their research: Professors Spahn (Goethe Universität, Frankfurt) and Clunies-Ross (Strathclyde University, Glasgow), as well as Mr Jetin (Université Paris XIII). The conclusions of the work will be drawn by British Labour member Glyn Ford.
We recall that the suggestion by Professor Tobin to establish a tax on international financial transactions in order to combat speculation led to a resolution being voted at the Belgian Chamber and Senate and initiatives in France, the United Kingdom and Spain, as well as the creation of ATTAC Groups.
