GENERAL NEWS / (eu) eu/citizens/governance

07/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - On 21 March, its tenth anniversary, ECAS (Euro Citizen Action Service) is organising at the European Parliament a seminar on the consultation and involvement of citizens in "European governance", which will serve to prepare its contribution to the European Commission's White Paper on this subject, to come out this summer. Eighty participants, NGO representatives, experts from civil society, MEPs and Commission officials are to take part at the meeting that will seek to answer three questions: 1) Should there be a Euro-compact (systematic consultation system) between the Commission and NGOs? 2) How can citizens' awareness of their European rights be increased? and 3) How can complaints and requests from citizens be better handled by the Commission? Conclusions will be drawn by Professor Deirdre Curtin of the University of Utrecht, after a presentation by European Ombudsman Jacob Söderman on the fight for transparency in the European Union.
