EU condemns attacks by Albanian extremists

Brussels, 07/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - On 6 March, the Swedish Presidency adopted the following declaration on behalf of the EU: "The EU strongly condemns the ethnic Albanian extremist attacks on 4 March near the village of Tanusevci, leading to the death of three FYROM soldiers. Violent acts such as these endanger the stability and security of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and its citizens, and should stop immediately. The EU expects that any further action by the authorities of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia in response to provocations will be measured. The EU calls on all political leaders in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Kosovo to isolate the forces behind the attacks and shoulder their responsibility for peace and stability in the region. In this context the European Union reiterates its strong attachment to the principle of inviolability of borders, including the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the FYROM.". (See yesterday's EUROPE, p.6, for Javier Solana's declaration on the subject).
