ECB presents "Euro, our currency" campaign

Brussels, 07/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - Ten months before the transition towards the Euro, the European Central Bank (ECB) presented, on Tuesday, during a conference organised by the Belgian National Bank, the information campaign on the introduction of the Euro, which will be launched next September under the slogan "The Euro, our currency". Wim Duisenberg, ECB President, underlined the crucial role of the campaign, which must notably prove that Europe is not an abstract idea. For the ECB, this information effort is justified by the logistical challenge and the psychological shock of the transition, which will see the disappearance, on 28 February 2002, of the sometimes ancient currencies. One of the aims is to teach the public to distinguish between a real and counterfeit Euro. The conference, on Tuesday, was the first in a round of eleven that will take place in the countries of the Euro zone. The campaign, which costs around EUR 80 million, includes the publishing of adverts in the written press and on television, and the distribution of 200 million pamphlets on the Euro inside and outside the Euro zone.
