27/09/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Central Bank (ECB) has formally denied that its president, Mr Wim Duisenberg, had told a Swiss newspaper that the ECB will put pressure on Denmark for it to revise its pension system unless the people of Denmark vote in favour of Denmark's participation in single currency. On the contrary, Mr Duisenberg pointed out that labour market reforms are needed in certain countries, and added: "In my opinion, Denmark plays an advanced role in this field and could help to produce the appropriate changes in the euro area (if it joins). Denmark itself will not be concerned by the need for reforms as it is already the top of the class". In Denmark, on the eve of the referendum, words wrongly attributed to Mr Duisenberg had caused some agitation.
