ECONOMIC INTERPENETRATION / (eu) privatization

- Germany: the German Government has announced that it was committed "to the privatization of the whole of DEUTSCHE TELEKOM and to reduce its stake not to 25% but to 0%". This decision comes within the framework of DEUTSCHE TELEKOM's takeover of the American firm VOICE STREAM. Part of the American Congress, indeed, considered that the purchase of an American firm by a company held to the tune of 25% by a foreign State should be totally prohibited. Yet, the German Government still has a direct 58% stake in the telecommunications operator and 13% through its Reconstruction Fund. - Iceland: the Icelandic authorities are preparing to privatize the country's national telecommunications operator, ICELAND TELECOM, 30% to 40% of which should be offered to foreign investors in March 2001. The method for this placing on the market, the country's largest, will be known in October. ICELAND TELECOM is valued at between 40 and 60 Icelandic kroner. - Turkey: the Turkish Government is considering selling a stake of up to 29% in TURK TELEKOM, foreign investors having shown little interest in a 20% stake that would not have given them sufficient control.
