One year ahead of schedule, the elections for the Presidency of the Republic of Ukraine were held on 24 May 2014. The pro-western billionaire businessmen Petro Poroshenko had them sewn up in the first round. On 27 June, he travelled to Brussels to sign the association agreement with the European Union (see EUROPE B11110A3). That September, it was ratified by the Ukrainian parliament.
