05/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - On 30 September, Italian public prosecutor Armando Spataro called for 13 years' imprisonment for the former CIA station chief Jeff Castelli, and for the former head of Italian military intelligence, General Nicolo Pollari, who are accused of involvement in the 2003 kidnapping by the CIA in Italy of Abu Omar, an Egyptian cleric. Twelve years' imprisonment were requested for two former CIA staff members in Italy, Robert Lady and Sabrina De Sousa, with 11 requested for agents present in the street at the time of the abduction. Thirty-three people have been brought to trial in the case before a Milan court, including 26 CIA agents being judged in absentia. The verdict may be returned in early November. Washington has made it clear that it has no intention of handing its agents over to the Italian justice system. (B.C./transl.fl)
