Brussels, 15/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - The EU expects Iran to explain and clarify its recent “proposals” on the nuclear dossier at the meeting with the “Six” (US, Russia, China, United Kingdom, France and Germany) programmed for 1 October and likely to be in Turkey. This meeting will no doubt take place at a political directors' level and will be preceded next week by a meeting between foreign affairs ministers from the “Six”, in a backdrop to the UN General Assembly in New York. Meeting on Monday evening at their External Relations Council, EU foreign ministers were briefed by High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana on the document Tehran presented last week. Without going into too much detail on the nuclear dossier, this document focuses more on proposing international cooperation in several domains, including, it would appear, efforts at preventing research, production, possession and proliferation of nuclear weapons (EUROPE 9975). At the end of Tuesday's Council, Carl Bildt told the press that the Iranian proposal “is not very concrete but it means they are prepared to talk”. He added that nobody expects the Iranian proposal to contain a solution to the problem. While awaiting the meetings of the coming weeks, ministers were still unable, on Monday night, to say whether the EU would envisage greater “autonomous” sanctions against Iran should the country prove uncooperative and if there wasn't consensus at the Security Council for taking such measures at a United Nations level. Mr Bildt emphasised that the nuclear dossier is undoubtedly the “main outstanding issue” at the moment with Iran but is not the only one.
