Fischer Boel to leave agriculture

Brussels, 14/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - After five years as European Agriculture Commissioner speaking from Växjö (Sweden) on Sunday 13, confirmed that she would not be seeking a further term of office in that post. On the sidelines of the informal meeting of EU agriculture ministers, Fischer Boel said that she had taken her decision several months ago and that the dairy sector crisis had in no way influenced her. At this point, only former Romanian agriculture minister Dacian Ciolos has shown any interest in becoming the new Agriculture Commissioner. Fischer Boel acknowledged that the effort of the last five years was a major factor in her decision not to continue. She was Danish agriculture minister from 2001 to 2004, and is now 66 years old.
