THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/cuba

28/08/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 27 August, European diplomats in Havana expressed their concern over the fate of Cuban dissident Darsi Ferrer, who was arrested over a month ago. “We are very concerned about (his) situation,” AFP reports Swedish diplomat Ingemar Cederberg as saying. Cederberg, accompanied by German, Hungarian, British and Polish colleagues, went to the home in Havana of Yusnaimy Jorge, Ferrer's wife. Trained doctor Ferrer, a bitter critic of the Cuban government, was arrested on 21 July, officially for the illegal purchase of construction materials to repair his house. He has since been locked up in prison in Havana. In 2008, Cuba and the European Union resumed cooperation, suspended since 2003 following the arrest of 75 Cuban government opponents, 54 of whom are still imprisoned. (O.J./transl.rt)
