Brussels, 24/06/2009 (Agence Europe) - The current finance minister in the Lithuanian government, Algirdas Gediminas Semeta has been put forward by his government to the president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, to take over from Dalia Grybauskaite (Lithuanian president elect) as European Commissioner for the budget and financial programming. Before becoming finance minister, Semeta, a 47 year old economist, was president of the national stock market monitoring committee. He also occupied different posts in the government and private sector. Ms Grybauskaite is due to become president of her country on 12 July. For the time being, she is still working at the Commission but will resign as soon as Mr Semeta's appointment procedure by the Commission and Council is formally completed. (H.B./transl.rh)
