Brussels, 24/06/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 23 June, the UN High Commission for Refugees (HCR) published a raft of recommendations for the Swedish Presidency of EU. Amongst other things, the HCR calls on Sweden to reiterate the importance of a rights-based approach to the management and control of immigration. "Recent events, including Italy's push-back of boat people and elections in which anti-immigration parties scored big gains in a number of EU countries, give rise to concern about Europe's commitment to ensuring access to protection", says the organisation. The HCR supports the reinforcement of solidarity between the member states, particularly towards countries facing particular migratory pressures, and the relocation from one member state to another of persons recognised as refugees. The High Commission also calls for the reinforcement of the quality of the decision-making process regarding asylum applications across the EU and hopes that the European Asylum Support Office will give top priority to this matter.
