Brussels, 19/05/2009 (Agence Europe) - Greece is well on the way to joining the US Visa Waiver Program (VWP) very shortly. That, at least, is what came out of a meeting in Athens on Friday 15 May, between Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis and American Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg. Greek daily Kathimerini reported that negotiations between Washington and the Greek authorities had reached agreement, likely to be finalised in September. “The United States has said that Greece is on the right track towards joining the visa waiver program,” a diplomatic source told EUROPE, confirming that an agreement could finalised in September. Greek President Karoulos Papoulias and Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis are expected to travel to Washington when they attend the United Nations General Assembly, due to begin on 22 September. On 5 May, Democrat representative in the US Congress Carolyn B. Maloney and her Republican counterpart Gus M. Bilirakis put a Bill to Congress on Greece's joining the VWP. (B.C./tranl.rt)
