Brussels, 16/04/2009 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament Group of Democrats and Liberals (ALDE) is highly critical of a resolution adopted by the UN on 27 March on combating defamation of religions. The resolution expresses concern about the growing intolerance and xenophobia, mainly against Islam, and invites governments to criminalise blasphemy. The ALDE takes the view that the resolution goes against freedom of expression and, in a letter signed by all members of the group, MEPs call on the president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, to take all possible measures to counter the UN initiative. “Barroso should use his forthcoming annual meeting with religious leaders to make a joint public statement in support of full and unrestricted freedom of speech”, says Sophie in't Veld of the Netherlands. She goes on to conclude: “The exercise of the freedom of religion and the freedom of conscience fully depends on the freedom of expression. Criticism of religious, political or other views should not be subject to any restrictions. That would be contrary to our democratic values”. (I.L./transl.jl)
