Loan for new water treatment infrastructure in Lebanon

Brussels, 08/04/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 3 April, the European Investment Bank (EIB) granted a loan of €70 million to support the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant in the region of Kesrwan.

The financing of efficient infrastructure is a priority for the EIB to create an investment-friendly environment and improve quality of life. The new loan granted by the Bank in the aim of strengthening water treatment infrastructure in Kesrwan aims to improve water treatment services in this highly populated tourist region, the aim being to prevent untreated wastewater from being discharged into the sea. The project is included in the priority list of projects for Lebanon and is part of the National Action Plan for pollution reduction in connection with the Barcelona Convention. Under the recent Neighbourhood Investment Facility (NIF), the European Commission will also provide technical assistance of €4 million to those promoting the Kesrwan water treatment plant.
