Europe expresses concern

Brussels, 08/04/2009 (Agence Europe) - The EU is concerned about developments in Moldova following the general elections last weekend won by the Communists, headed by President Vladimir Voronin. On Tuesday 7 April 2009, the Czech Presidency of the EU, the EU high representative for the CFSP, Javier Solana, and the EU external relations commissioner, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, each issued statements condemning violence and urging all sides to exercise restraint. There have been clashes since the weekend in Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, between demonstrators and police, clashes which continued on Wednesday as police regained control of the parliament building and the Moldovan presidency building, which had been occupied on Tuesday by demonstrators. A European Commission spokesperson explained on Thursday lunchtime: “There has been no direct contact between the European Community and the Moldovan government at this point of time”. A meeting of EU member states' ambassadors with the head of the European Commission's delegation to Moldova and the EU's special representative for the country, Kalman Mizsei, was taking place, however, after the Moldovan authorities said they were planning to throw Romania's ambassador out of the country, accusing the ambassador of causing the disturbances. EUROPE spoke to Kalman Mizsei but he refused to comment. (A.B./transl.fl)
