Disappointment at outcome of Indian Ocean tuna Commission meeting

Brussels, 08/04/2009 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission says it is 'disappointed' with the outcome of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) meeting in Bali, Indonesia, on 30 March to 3 April 2009. The major sticking point was the failure to reach agreement on catch limits for tropical tuna and swordfish and also the proposals on shark-finning and data reporting on shark species. The IOTC did, however, manage to make some headway on 1) the EU- backed observer programme for the region (to gather scientific information about all types of fishing gears); and 2) a proper freeze on fishing capacity. The IOTC also recognised the gravity of piracy in the western Indian Ocean and called on the international community to give its support to fighting piracy in this region. (L.C. trans fl)
