07/04/2009 (Agence Europe) - Jacques Barrot, European Commissioner for Immigration, said on Monday 6 April that he had evoked a number of urgent matters regarding immigration in the Mediterranean with EU interior ministers. “Frontex must try to intervene closer to the African coast”, he said, pointing out that this would be the first thing to negotiate with the Libyan ambassador on Tuesday 7 April. “We must include the problem of migration in the EU's foreign policy towards third countries (…) and the European dimension must be present in all agreements with third countries and countries of origin”, he said. On this point, he recommended a convergence of views with Benita Ferrero-Waldner, External Relations Commissioner. Barrot finally called for solidarity. “Sooner or later, all member states will be affected”, he said, concluding: “Today, we are concerned by the financial crisis. Tomorrow, we shall be concerned by migratory problems”. (B.C./transl.jl)
