Brussels, 01/04/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 31 March, the EP foreign affairs committee debated the report by Doris Pack (EPP-ED, Germany) on Bosnia and Herzegovina. MEPs made it very clear to the leaders of the different entities that form the country (the Bosniak/Croat Federation and the Republika Srpska): only a single unified state can have any hope of one day joining the EU. The prospect of EU accession was offered to Bosnia and Herzegovina as a single country, not to its constituent parts, they stressed. Consequently, threats of secession and other attempts to undermine the sovereignty of the state were “totally unacceptable”, says the report, which was adopted by a very wide majority (the plenary session vote will take place in Strasbourg at the end of April). MEPs were also critical of the country's politicians for their inability to reach “a common political vision” and denounced their “short-sighted nationalism” which compromised the aim of co-existence within the EU. To help achieve reform the high representative (HR) of the international community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austrian Valentin Inzko (who is also the EU special representative), should assist the Bosniak authorities complete and carry out the five objectives and two conditions set by the Peace Implementation Council, MEPs said. The Bureau of the HR should remain in place until these objectives have been achieved. MEPs deplored the scant attention granted by the Council to the deteriorating political climate in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the lack of determination shown hitherto by member states to deal seriously and in a coordinated way with the country's situation.
