Brussels, 01/04/2009 (Agence Europe) - On 31 March, the committee on industry adopted the informal compromise on the new regulation on roaming, which it reached with the Czech Presidency on 24 March (see EUROPE 9869). For consumers, this means: a maximum price of 43 cents per minute for calls made from abroad and 19 cents for calls received, as of July 2010. These limits will be gradually reduced to 35 and 11 cents respectively from July 2011; a maximum price of 11 cents per text message sent from abroad from 1 July 2009 and no charge for voice mails received from abroad as of July 2010. Differences of opinion were noted between the Parliament and the Council on the cost of downloading files. The compromise sets a maximum price of €1 per megabyte downloaded from July 2009. By 2011, this will be reduced to 80 cents and then 50 cents. The Parliament will give its opinion on the compromise during April's plenary. "I hope that all parties will support this agreement at first reading, to allow European consumers to take full advantage of this measure this summer", said rapporteur Adina-Iona Valean (ALDE, Romania).
