Brussels, 02/03/2009 (Agence Europe) - After similar recent action in agriculture, the European Commission, on Friday 27 February, adopted a proposal to repeal 14 obsolete CFP (common fisheries policy) regulations.
These regulations are still technically in force and relate in particular to: - an interim common measure for restructuring the inshore fishing industry and aquaculture (projects in 1982); - compensatory indemnities for sardines (following Spain's accession to the European Community); - coordination and promotion of research in the fisheries sector; - measures relating to the implementation of the common fisheries policy in the former German Democratic Republic (following the unification of Germany); - the Community framework for studies and pilot projects on the conservation and management of fishery resources in the Mediterranean; - transitional measures for the management of certain Mediterranean fisheries; - measures to be applied in 2001 for the recovery of the cod stock in the Irish Sea; - conversion of fishing vessels and fishermen dependent, until 1999, on the fisheries agreement with Morocco (national plans for conversion of the fleets to which this applied having come to an end); - specific measures to compensate Spanish fishermen and shellfish breeding and aquaculture sectors following the oil pollution after the “Prestige” sank.
