Brussels, 02/03/2009 (Agence Europe) - The Czech prime minister and current president of the European Council, Mirek Topolánek, confirmed that on 5 April US president Barack Obama will meet the 27 heads of state and government from the European Union at a special summit. Czech diplomats explained on Monday that the agenda for this special meeting has not yet been definitively set out but did explain that the future of transatlantic relations, the economic and financial crisis, as well as international questions (the Middle East, Afghanistan etc) are expected to have pride of place. The Prague visit will close Mr Obama's first European visit. He will first of all attend the G20 summit in London on 2 April, followed by the 60th anniversary NATO summit on 3-4 April in Strasbourg, Baden Baden and Kehl. The special meeting in Prague will not replace the customary EU-US summit June summit in Washington (the EU will be represented by Messrs Topolánek, Barroso and Solana), explain Czech diplomats. On Tuesday 3 March at the White House, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown will be the first European leader to meet the new US president. (H.B./transl.rh)
