Strasbourg, 21/11/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 20 November, the European Parliament adopted a resolution strongly condemning the execution of a young Somali girl Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow in Somalia on 27 October. The 13 year old was condemned to death for committing adultery in breach of Islamic law, when she had, in fact, been the victim of rape by three men. She was stoned to death by a group of 50 men in a stadium in the southern port of Kismayo, which is under the control of the al-Shabab militia, in front of around 1,000 spectators. Parliament called on the Somali government to condemn the execution and prevent such acts in future, and “to restore the honour of Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow posthumously”. MEPs support the attempts of the legitimate Somali government to assert its control over the port of Kismayo, and called “for those accused of raping Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow to be brought to justice by due process”. Urging the EU to “provide all necessary support in order to create a lasting democratic government in Somalia”, MEPs pressed the African Union mission to Somalia (AMISOM) to make full use of the powers granted it to protect civilians, and they hoped that AMISOM would be able to monitor human rights violations, investigate and report them. They also called on Somali and Kenyan authorities to do all they can to bring about the release of the two Italian nuns taken prisoner in Kenya, close to the border with Somalia, where they were working with Somali refugees.
