Germany may not refuse to recognise the surnames of its nationals as already registered in another Member State

Brussels, 15/10/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 14 October 2008, the European Court of Justice ruled that a German child has the right to be registered in Germany with the surname it received at birth in Denmark. In Case C-253/06, the German authorities refused to register the double-barrelled surname of the child as entered on the child's Danish birth certificate.
