Commission demands additional measures for fighting corruption and organised crime

Brussels, 18/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - Following a meeting with the Albanian minister of foreign affairs, Lulzim Basha, on 15 September in Brussels, Commissioner Olli Rehn declared that Albania had made progress in the domain of democracy and the rule of law, as well as in the implementation of the stabilisation and association agreement (SAA) “but still needs to do more”. The problem of corruption and organised crime risks appearing at the centre of the annual progress report on Albania, which the Commission will be publishing on 5 November. The commissioner explained that the country should reform its legal system and electoral legislation and stressed that the forthcoming parliamentary elections in 2009 ought to be based on this new law, “in compliance with international standards”. Mr Rehn said that “this is key for Albania's progress on the EU road”. (H.B./transl.rh)
