Call for consensus on European integration

Brussels, 18/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - Commissioner Olli Rehn (enlargement) has warned leaders of the different parts of Bosnia-Herzegovina - The Muslim-Croat Federation and Republika Srspka - that their persistent divergences on the political and institutional future of the country risks putting a brake on the country's European integration. At the end of a meeting with Prime Minister Nikola Spiric on Wednesday 17 September in Brussels, Mr Rehn told the press: “All leaders need to understand that the current lack of consensus on key reforms and future constitutional evolution is not helping the country's progress on its road to the EU”. The commissioner explained that the signing of the stabilisation and association agreement (SAA) on 1 June last and implementation of the interim agreement were important steps but the country now had to demonstrate its capacity to respect the commitments it has made and carry out the reforms necessary for EU accession. On 5 November, the Commission will publish its next progress report on Bosnia-Herzegovina and the other Balkan countries. Nikola Spiric assured Mr Rehn that the members of the government had the will and determination to “do everything possible” to meet the demands of the EU and obtain a positive report in November. The prime minister affirmed that “two thirds of the 30 tasks the Commission asked us to undertake are already accomplished and we are working on those remaining”, including constitutional reform. He also asserted that “we are all committed to accelerating the way to Europe”. (H.B./transl.rh)
