Brussels, 18/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 16 September, the Socialist Group in the European Parliament called on the Tunisian government to “stick to its undertakings on public freedoms and human rights in accordance with the partnership agreement between Tunisia and the European Union” after the Gafsa Court of Appeal in Tunisia sentenced Zakia Dhifaoui, a member of the Forum démocratique pour le travail et les libertés (FDTL, Democratic Labour and Freedom Forum), to four and a half months' imprisonment for her part in a peaceful demonstration in support of the inhabitants of the Redeyef mining (phosphates) district. The Socialist Group expressed its “deep anxiety and concern”, called for the Tunisian government to act and asked the European Commission to “keep close tabs on this case and deliver a promise to obtain swift clarification of the situation”.
