Three films compete for LUX 2008 prize

Brussels, 16/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - Three films are this year competing for the LUX 2008 prize awarded by the European Parliament. They are: “Delta” by Kornel Mundruczo (Hungary, Germany), “Le silence de Lorna by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (Belgium, Germany, France, Italy and the United Kingdom) and “Obcan Havel” by Miroslav Janek and Pavel Koutecky (Czech Republic). The three films will be shown at the European Parliament from 15 September to 17 October 2008. Once the panel of judges composed of 785 MEPs has voted, the LUX prize will be awarded to the winner at a ceremony on 22 October. Estimated at a value of €87 000, the LUX prize will allow the film selected to gain unprecedented distribution within the member states of the European Union as it will benefit from sub-titles in 23 official languages as well as - and this is an innovation this year - translation into sign language . “Culture is a way to bring Europeans together and the cinema is a very good medium for this”, said Parliament Vice-President Gérard Onesta, at the presentation of the event. “The film, which would have probably never come out of its own 'bubble', from one day to another can be exhibited in no matter which festival or cinema or TV across the EU. It is a massive help for the distribution of the film. (…) One can see through this, that cultural diversity, if one is given the means, is not an obstacle but on the contrary an enrichment”, said Mr Onesta. Last year, the prize was awarded to “Auf der anderen Seite” by Fatih Akin. (I.L./transl.jl).
