Brussels, 16/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) will meet in Brussels on Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 September, under the chairmanship of Dimitris Dimitiradis. Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs will deliver a speech at 3.00pm on Wednesday, addressing the topic of climate change and energy policy. This issue will be the subject of opinions presented by two members of the Various Interests Group of the EESC: the first, an own initiative report by Frederick Osborn of the UK on “Climate change - International negotiations” and the second by Lutz Ribbe of Germany on “Energy from renewable sources”.
The EESC will also vote on: - an exploratory opinion at the request of the French Presidency of the Council of the EU entitled “Towards balanced development of the urban environment: challenges and opportunities” (rapporteurs: Mr van Iersel, Employers' Group, Netherlands, and Mr Grasso, Various Interests Group, Italy); - three exploratory opinions on “Multilingualism” (rapporteur: Ms le Nouail Marlière, Employees' Group, France), “The internet of things” (rapporteur: Mr Retureau, Employers' Group, France) and “EU/Africa strategy” (rapporteur: Mr Dantin, Employees' Group, France); - a referral to the European Parliament on “Governance and partnership at national and regional levels and project basis in the field of regional policy” (rapporteur-general: Mr van Iersel); - three own initiative reports on the “Impact of the ongoing development of energy markets on industrial value chains in Europe” (rapporteur: Mr Zboøil, Employers' Group, Czech Republic), “Extending anti-discrimination measures beyond employment - towards a single, comprehensive anti-discrimination directive” (rapporteur: Mr Crook, Employees' Group, UK) and The EU Economy: 2007 Review - Moving Europe's productivity frontier” (rapporteur: Mr Morgan, Employers' Group, UK).
