Brussels, 10/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 10 September, the European Commission opened an in-depth investigation into Romania's plans to grant €57 million in state aid for a staff training programme at the Ford Motors car factory in Craiova, in the south-west of Romania. The Commission is doubtful whether this aid is likely to result in additional training programmes over and above those that Ford would very probably organise itself if the aid was not granted. It has doubts, then, over whether the aid envisaged complies with Community rules on aid for training, and points out in a press release that Community rules only allows state aid which provides a genuine incentive for additional training. “Otherwise, the only result of the state aid would be to give the beneficiary an unfair advantage over its competitors by relieving it of costs for training that it needs to operate its business,” the Commission states.
