09/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission, on Monday 8 September, opened an in-depth investigation into the planned acquisition of Martinair by KLM, both Dutch air transport companies. The Commission's initial market investigation indicated that the proposed acquisition might substantially reduce competition on the route between Amsterdam and the Dutch Antilles. The Commission deemed insufficient the compensation measures so far proposed by KLM, which already holds a 50% share in Martinair (the other half currently belonging to Danish transport company Maersk). The investigation, which must be completed by 21 January 2009, relates only to passenger travel. There were no concerns with regard to the cargo market. (C.D./transl.rt)
