Shipwrecked ferry in the Philippines was carrying toxic chemicals - Joint EU-UN report recommends removing poisons before salvage operations begin

Brussels, 04/08/2008 (Agence Europe) - EU and United Nations toxicology experts (UNEP/OCHA) have published their report into the potential environmental consequences of the sinking of the 'Princess of the Stars' ferry on 21 June 2008 in the centre of the Philippines.

The report was submitted on 1 August to the Filipino authorities. It confirms that the ferry was carrying five pesticides in two different containers - one 40-foot container was found to contain only Endosulfan, while a 10-foot...
