Italy sends Commission clarification about immigration legislation

Brussels, 04/08/2008 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has confirmed that it had received on 1 August, the Italian report on emergency measures on traveller camps (in the regions of Campania, Lazio and Lombardy) and legislative decrees and the Italian “security package”. Jacques Barrot the Commissioner for justice, freedom and security announced in a press statement that, “I have observed respect by the Italian authorities on the planned deadline for the sending of these documents. This allows for the strengthening of necessary dialogue between the European Commission and Italian authorities. We will now scrutinise the texts sent us to check the compatibility of the measures taken by the Italian authorities with Community legislation”. Italian legislative decrees focus on family reunification, recognition of refugee status and free movement of European citizens and their families, for whom the authorities are demanding that the European Commission provides a preliminary assessment of these texts before their formal approval. Mr Barrot has welcomed the fact that, “this approach appears to guarantee a determination to respect European legislation, whose value we all appreciate”. Mr Barrot's services will be analysing the draft laws, “as soon as possible”. (A.B./trans/rh)
