THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/sudan

15/07/2008 (Agence Europe) - The European Union has taken note of the statements made by the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Luis Moreno-Ocampo, concerning crimes committed in Darfur. It recalls that the ICC plays a fundamental role in the promotion of international justice. Considering sufficient evidence of the Sudanese president's involvement in genocide in Darfur has now been gathered, Mr Moreno-Ocampo called, on Monday 14 July, for an arrest warrant to be issued against Omar el-Béchir. This request must now be examined by the judges of the ICC Pre-Trial Chamber, adds the press release published the same day by the French EU Presidency, which reaffirms “the strategic importance of the search for a political solution in Darfur and of the implementation of the North-South peace agreement (CPA)”.
