27/06/2008 (Agence Europe) - Dealing with the global problem of illegal drugs is a responsibility shared by all countries around the world and the EU is planning to take global action against the abuse and illegal sale of drugs, explained EU Justice, Freedom and Security Commissioner Jacques Barrot on Thursday 26 June 2008, international anti-drugs day. The European Commission is paying particular attention to carrying out the final assessment of the first four-year anti-drugs action plan (2004-2008) and the launch of a new action plan (2009-2012), putting into practice its 2005-2012 anti-drugs strategy, explained Barrot. He explained that the Commission's action plan would be unveiled in a communication in the autumn of 2008. Under the EU treaties, most powers to tackle illegal drugs are held by the Member States.
