Jacques Barrot to monitor detention centres

Brussels, 27/06/2008 (Agence Europe) - EU Justice Commissioner Jacques Barrot repeated on Thursday 26 June 2008 that he would be checking up on the conditions at detention centres for illegal immigrants in the EU. He said in two separate interviews with French media that he would be 'sticking his nose' into the conditions under which illegal immigrants are being held and would go and see cases sent on to him by MEPs. He said that the Vincennes retention centre in France (near Paris) that had recently been damaged in an arson attack, was a 'bad example' of the EU's detention centres. He admitted that elsewhere in the EU, detention conditions were also 'unacceptalbe.' Barrot repeated his intention to monitor transposition of the Return Directive in Member States, rejecting the idea that the directive would be used to deport waves of immigrants. He explained that Member States were not using the directive to tighten up current legislation, which would fly in the face of the spirit of the directive. (B.C.)
