Brussels, 25/06/2008 (Agence Europe) - Parliamentary work on proposals of the climate/energy package is being stepped up in the European Parliament to take into account the commitment taken by EU heads of state and government to adopt this series of measures at the end of the year, in a single reading.
The draft reports on review of the Community emissions trading system for quotas of greenhouse gas emissions (ETS) (rapporteur Avril Doyle, EPP-ED, Ireland) and on the breakdown of effort between member states for sectors not covered by the ETS (rapporteur: Satu Hassi, Greens,Finland) were for the first time discussed on 25 June within the parliamentary committee on the environment. For these two dossiers, the deadline for submitting amendments is 2 July, the vote on the report is foreseen for 7 October and the plenary vote for December.
On 24 June, the members of the committee discussed the proposal for a directive on the geological storage and capture of carbon (rapporteur: Chris Davies, ALDE, UK). The deadline for submitting amendments is set at 8 July, and the adoption of the report in parliamentary committee at 25 September with a view to the plenary vote in December.
The proposal for a directive on promotion of renewable energies (rapporteur Claude Turmes, Greens/EFA, Luxembourg), which comes under the scope of the industry committee, will be the subject of a simple opinion from the environment committee during the extraordinary session in Strasbourg on 7 July.
