Brussels, 11/06/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 11 June, the College of Commissioners agreed to send policy advice to Romania relating to its budgetary strategy (see EUROPE 9679). For internal reasons - the translation of this advice into Romanian - the formal decision had not been published at the time of going to press. The spokeswoman for Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia confirmed, however, that the Commission had called on Romania to intensify its consolidation of public finances, while continuing its structural reform. Romanian public deficit could come close to the 3% reference value in 2009 and go above it in 2009. According to the Commission's spring economic forecast, it could reach 2.9% in 2008 and 3.7% in 2009. (A.B./transl.rt)
