Brussels, 27/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - With just a few days to go to the first assessment conference on the International Compact with Iraq (ICI), to be held in Stockholm on 29 May, the foreign ministers reiterated their wish to have partnership relations with Iraq. In conclusions adopted on Monday 26 May, the Council calls for a safe, stable, democratic, prosperous and united Iraq that upholds human rights. It welcomes the latest visit to Brussels by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Malicki (EUROPE 9644) and the possibility opening up to strengthen the EU's political commitment towards Iraq. Ministers encourage the Iraqi government to continue to move forward in the political process and national reconciliation. Adoption of the legislation necessary with a view to provincial elections at the end of 2008, together with the constitution of a national unity government and an agreement on the law relating to hydrocarbons would be important steps in this respect. Given the problems of Iraqi refugees, of whom over two million are now to be found in neighbouring countries such as Jordan and Syria, the Council encourages the Iraqi government to use its resources to help these countries face up to the additional burden of hosting refugees. The EU restates its wish to conclude negotiations on a trade and cooperation agreement as quickly as possible, as well as to strengthen cooperation on energy. (A.B.)
