Brussels, 16/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - The EU, which planned to take over from the UN mission to Kosovo (UNMIK) with its own rule of law mission (EULEX) on 15 June, will probably have to delay this deadline since no agreement has been reached with the UN on the handing over of powers. A European diplomat, quoted by Reuters, said on Friday that the deployment of EULEX was continuing, but that the logistics necessary for everything to be in place would be a bit problematic. In all, some 2,200 men (police officers, lawyers and customs officers) were to begin their mission on 15 June, but today there are only about 220 in place, and none in the north of Kosovo. “It is very possible that we won't go much further before 15 June, as long as we don't have a clearer political framework,” said head of mission Yves de Kermabon. He acknowledged that “the mission is a bit on stand-by, awaiting decisions from the UN”, where Russia is slowing the decision-making process. (H.B.)
