Brussels, 16/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - On 19-20 May, the European Commission will host the first Global Carbon Market Forum, organised by the International Carbon Action Partnership. This partnership, which was launched last October, brings together public authorities that operate or are developing compulsory “cap and trade” systems for cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The 150 or more participants expected will discuss the key issues for ensuring the success and credibility of any emissions trading scheme (monitoring, reporting, verification, compliance and enforcement).
By sharing experience and best practice on greenhouse gas emissions trading schemes, the International Carbon Action Partnership seeks to make such systems compatible and, thus, facilitate the creation of the global carbon market that is essential for encouraging investment in low-carbon technologies and projects worldwide.
The Forum will be opened by Mogens Parter Carl, Director General at Directorate General Environment of the European Commission, and Peter Grannis, Commissioner for Environmental Conservation of New York State. (A.N.)
