16/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - Experts from the European Commission and the Community Fisheries Control Agency will present their analysis of the main trends which are shaping the 2008 eastern bluefin tuna fishery on Thursday 22 May (see EUROPE 9623). They will discuss the current state of play in the fishing season, during which 96% of catches are made in the month of May. The quotas are rapidly running out and it is important to avoid repeating the errors of last year (when Italy and France overfished their quotas). 'The risk of overfishing remains very high, however, given the persistent overcapacity of the EU fleet, and rapid action to close the fishery as the quota approaches exhaustion will be crucial,' explained the European Commission.
