Brussels, 06/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - During the last session of the WTO committee on agriculture in Geneva on 30 April, the chairman of the committee, Crawford Falconer of New Zealand, accepted the reworded request put by a number of delegations to have more time before developing a new version of the revised draft compromise on modalities for the liberalisation of agricultural trade. Further meetings of the committee are scheduled for 8 and 9 May to look at the latest proposal on sensitive products, assess progress made concerning tropical products and preferential products, and decide on the next step. The new version of the draft compromise on agriculture by Mr Falconer should therefore not see the light of day until the week of 12 May. This further postponement also means more delay for the horizontal process of trade-offs between agriculture and industrial products (NAMA) and therefore further deferral of the ministerial meeting responsible for validating the global compromise on arrangements for trade liberalisation in the two main areas covered by the Round (EUROPE 9652).
