EU welcomes amendment of Article 301 of Penal Code but calls for other measures to ensure freedom of expression

Brussels, 30/04/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 30 April, the EU welcomed the Turkish parliament's decision to amend Article 301 of the penal code which, with a view to stifling denigration of the Turkish identity, considerably restricts freedom of expression in Turkey. The amendment is a “constructive step forward in ensuring freedom of expression and we look forward to its effective implementation”, states the Slovenian EU Presidency in a press release.
