Brussels, 28/04/2008 (Agence Europe) - Community sources stated on Monday 28 April that the vice president of the European Commission and commissioner for justice and home affairs, Franco Frattini, is very probably going to have his holiday extended by around a fortnight, due to delays in putting the new Italian government in place. The president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, had already agreed to extending unpaid leave for Mr Frattini until Monday 28 April, midnight. As we went to press, the new holiday for the commissioner is now planned until 14 May. His post is expected to be covered by the commissioner for transport, Jacques Barrot (France), who will present his candidacy for Frattini's post once the latter has definitively left the Commission to join the new government of Silvio Berlusconi. Forza Italia member, Antonio Tajani, is expected to take over from Barrot with transport (EUROPE 9649). The composition of the Italian government is expected to be announced in the middle of May, and its first action is expected to be putting forward the name of its new commissioner. (B.C.)
