Commission pursues infringement proceedings

Brussels, 04/04/2008 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has sent Bulgaria and Romania a reasoned opinion (second warning), which is the final stage before bringing the matter before the European Court of Justice, regarding the European emergency number 112. In Bulgaria, 112 can still not be used throughout the country. In Romania, the number is accessible everywhere, but information on the location of the caller is still not being sent automatically to the emergency services for calls from mobile telephones. The Commission adds that information on call localisation for 112 calls is still not available in Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Slovakia. The proceedings against Poland, furthermore, have been suspended in order to assess progress made in practice. Lastly, the Commission has closed two cases underway against Finland, as this member state has now changed its law on the communications market, which entered into force on 1 January 2008. The national regulatory authorities now have the legal basis and powers necessary to guarantee effective competition and thus guarantee to fulfil the European regulatory requirements for telecommunications, as was not the case hitherto.
